SODIUM HYDROSULFITE

Chemical formula: H2O4S2:2Na
Chemical Abstract Society Number (CAS#): 7775-14-6
United Nations Number (UN#): 1384

Chemical structure:

Also called sodium hydrosulphite, sodium dithionite, sodium sulfoxylate, and sulfoxylate. Sodium hydrosulfite is used in the manufacture of a variety of products; photographic film; wine; fine writing papers; leather goods; metal recovery; and, as reducing agent in colored fabrics. It has relatively low toxicity: the LD50 is 5 grams per kilogram of body weight. Consult material safety data sheet for specific details as concentrations and properties tend to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer slightly.

Applications for this chemical are varied as are the industries that use it. Sodium hydrosulfite generally is used in one of the following three applications:

  • As a reducing agent, sodium hydrosulfite chemically reduces other components by donating an electron or electrons
  • As a sulfonating agent, sodium hydrosulfite adds sulfur to another chemical compound.
  • As a cation source, sodium hydrosulfite adds a cation, or sodium, to a product system.

Sodium hydrosulfite is the common commercial name for products containing sodium dithionite, Na2S2O4, as the active ingredient. Some industries that commonly rely on sodium hydrosulfite in the manufacture of their products include:

  • Textiles as a reducing agent for color
  • Pulp and paper as an additive and reducing agent
  • Clay
  • Leather
  • Foods and beverages
  • Polymers
  • Photographics
  • Chemical processing
  • Cleaners
  • Water treatment – for controlling iron flash on white fabrics in bleaching environments
  • Gas purification
  • Environmental remediation

Sodium hydrosulfite is sold under the following brand and common names:

There is no domestic United States production of sodium hydrosulfite any longer. There are many companies making solutions from dry, but the dry production in the US is now all shut down.

We stock and offer sodium dithionite or sodium hydrosulfite from producers in Italy, Belgium, Germany, China, and, India among others. We represent ISO 9000 producers like BASF GmBh, and Idrosol S.p.A. and maintain stocks in warehouses located throughout the US to assure our customers of prompt reliable supplies of this important process chemical.

Our principle product is an air lift de-dusted sodium hydrosulfite. Many manufacturers simply apply a mineral oil or light oil to their product in an attempt to limit or minimize dust emanating from this powder when handled, however, we have a very specially segregated de-dusted product that uses a state-of-the-art air lift separation system to extract fines and recycle them into the manufacturing process reducing waste and fugitive dust which often leads to OSHA derived air pollution compliance problems and labor complaints in handling.

Please contact us and let us show you how our sodium hydrosulfite products can improve your process!
